Meaning and background
The story behind Epi
Epi is the sporting nickname of Spanish basketball player Juan Antonio San Epifanio. FIBA’s Hall of Fame biography connects him with FC Barcelona, four Olympic appearances and Spain’s silver medal at the 1984 Games. It also recalls his part in Barcelona’s 1992 torch ceremony. A basketball-loving household can therefore explain Epi through a particular athlete and sporting memory. His documented nickname does not establish Epi as a standard abbreviation of every longer name beginning with those letters.
