Meaning and background
The story behind Fleece
Fleece has both soft-material and less flattering English senses. Cambridge records an animal’s wool covering, artificial fabric and garments, and a verb for taking someone’s money dishonestly. A fluffy dog may make the wool image especially appealing, but the verb remains a documented alternative association. The evidence is lexical; it does not establish that every surname or pet name written Fleece originated in a sheep’s coat.
