Meaning and background
The story behind Genoa
Genoa is the English name of the historic Italian port called Genova, on the Ligurian coast. As a pet name, the connection is geographical: it brings a recognisable city name into everyday speech. Its three open vowel sounds distinguish it from Geno. The city association is well attested, but it would be wrong to claim that every use of Genoa as a dog's name was deliberately inspired by Italy.
