Meaning and background
The story behind Gerda
Gerda has at least two historically documented naming paths. In German and Dutch it can be associated with the Gerhard family, while Scandinavian Gerda can represent Old Norse Gerðr, connected with a word for an enclosure. This is not a case where one attractive translation should crowd out the other. As a dog name the two clear syllables are practical, but choosing one etymology needs knowledge of the intended tradition.
- Origin
- German/Dutch feminine form related to Gerd or Gerhard; a separate Scandinavian Gerda is a Latinised form of Old Norse Gerðr. Source
