Meaning and background

The story behind Gnarly

Gnarly is a word with two quite different registers. Its older sense describes rough, knotted wood or something rugged. Later, surfers applied it to intimidating waves, and wider slang developed meanings ranging from excellent to unpleasant. Those layers explain why a casual translation as simply 'awesome' misses the history. The silent initial g also makes its spelling less obvious when heard aloud.

Meaning
Originally knotted or rugged; later slang can mean impressive, difficult or unpleasant, depending on context. Source
Origin
English adjective related to gnarl; later adopted into surfing slang. Source
