Meaning and background
The story behind Gnocchi
Gnocchi is the Italian plural of gnocco, a word associated with small dumplings made from potatoes, flour or other ingredients. Treccani also notes older senses of a lump or protrusion, while the deeper proposed derivation is uncertain. It is therefore a food-inspired dog name, not an Italian term for a small dog. Its distinctive spelling can take some explanation for English speakers encountering it in writing.
