Meaning and background
The story behind Goji
Goji is familiar in Britain chiefly through the small red fruit marketed as a goji berry, also called a wolfberry. The American Heritage Dictionary identifies the fruit with shrubs in the genus Lycium and cautiously suggests the English word is an alteration of Mandarin gǒuqǐ. The linguistic qualification matters: the Mandarin derivation is probable rather than absolutely certain. Goji is a food-inspired name, not a medical or nutritional claim.
