Meaning and background
The story behind Goldilocks
Goldilocks originally described a person with bright golden hair, from an older adjective 'goldy' and plural 'locks' meaning hair. The name became attached to the young visitor in The Three Bears only after the story had circulated in other forms; the earliest printed version had an old woman instead. Its familiar fairy-tale association is therefore later than the word's descriptive history, a useful distinction for this playful name.
