Meaning and background
The story behind Gossamer
Gossamer is the English word for the fine, floating spider silk that can be seen across fields and hedges. It has been recorded since the Middle Ages, probably combining words for 'goose' and 'summer', although the semantic steps are disputed. The adjective later developed the sense of something very light and delicate. As a dog's name, it is a nature word with a specific history, not a folklore spirit or a botanical term.
