The story behind Graphite
Graphite is the mineral form of carbon long associated with pencils. Its name is comparatively recent: the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner coined Graphit in 1789 from Greek graphein, 'to write', with a mineral suffix. The name therefore connects with writing through a named scientific coinage, not a legend about grey-coated animals. With its three syllables and crisp opening, Graphite is a striking technical word-name.
