Meaning and background
The story behind Gremlin
Gremlin was originally a piece of aviation folklore rather than the name of a real animal. RAF flyers used it for an imaginary little being blamed when aircraft machinery went wrong; the term circulated before the Second World War and became better known during it. The ultimate formation of the word is uncertain. The much later Gremlins films are a familiar association, but they should not be mistaken for the word's first appearance.
