Meaning and background
The story behind Grimsby
Grimsby is a Lincolnshire place name with Scandinavian roots. Grimsby and Cleethorpes Museum gives the early form Grimesbi and interprets it as 'Grim's village' or 'Grim's settlement'. The modern town is better known as a North Sea fishing port, but that occupation is not the source of its name. As a dog name, Grimsby is place-inspired, and its two strong syllables make it distinct from the shorter Grim.
