Meaning and background
The story behind Guadalupe
Guadalupe comes from a Spanish title of the Virgin Mary and the Spanish place name associated with it. The place-name explanation includes an Arabic valley or river element, while the proposed Latin wolf element is less certain. A later Mexican devotional tradition is another important association documented by the reference. For an owner, that religious or family connection may be the whole reason for choosing it. The name should not be reduced to a certain wolf translation or stripped of its specific cultural setting.
