Meaning and background
The story behind Heathrow
Heathrow is best known as London's airport, but the airport's own history explains that the name came from the older agricultural hamlet of Heath Row. That settlement predated the airfield and was demolished for its development. As a dog name, Heathrow therefore has a real British place-name source rather than an aviation word meaning. It has two syllables in normal English speech.
- Origin
- British place-name from the former hamlet Heath Row, after which London Heathrow Airport was named. Source
