Meaning and background
The story behind Heisman
Heisman has a precise American football association through the Heisman Memorial Trophy. The award’s own history records its first presentation in 1935 and its renaming after coach and athletic director John W. Heisman died in 1936. A college-football household can therefore choose the name for the award or its namesake. That explains the sporting reference without converting a trophy’s history into an unsupported translation of the surname.
