Meaning and background
The story behind Hemingway
Hemingway is an English surname with a particularly distinctive Yorkshire place-name history. The Dictionary of American Family Names derives it from a settlement no longer securely identified, possibly involving an Old English personal name and a word for a path or road. The novelist Ernest Hemingway is a separate cultural association. Its three syllables are familiar, but a neat translation such as 'home by the way' is not supported.
