Meaning and background
The story behind Hershie
Hershie is recorded as a baseball nickname for Cincinnati Reds catcher Willard Hershberger. Charles F. Faber’s biography for the Society for American Baseball Research explicitly notes both Hershie and Hershey in accounts by the player’s associates. Hershberger reached the major leagues in 1938 and backed up catcher Ernie Lombardi. This is a documented historical nickname association; the biography does not establish a broader etymology for every modern use of Hershie.
