Meaning and background
The story behind Hickory
Hickory is the common English name for several North American hardwood trees of the genus Carya, and for their tough wood. Its history is especially interesting because the English word developed from an Algonquian term for a food made from pounded nuts. That is the origin of the botanical word, not proof of an inherited human given name. The pronunciation may be heard with two or three syllables depending on accent and reduction.
