Meaning and background
The story behind Hina
Hina is a good example of one spelling serving several independent naming traditions. Japanese Hina has meanings that depend on the kanji, Polynesian mythology has a goddess named Hina associated with the moon, and Urdu or Punjabi Hina refers to henna through an Arabic loanword. Those are separate histories, not three translations of one original name. Without knowing which tradition was intended, a single meaning would mislead.
