Meaning and background
The story behind Hoku
Hoku needs particular care because Hawaiian spelling and vowel length matter. The Pukui–Elbert dictionary gives hōkū, with long vowels, as 'star', while capitalised Hoku is also a named night of the full moon. Older dictionary entries include further senses for unmarked hoku. With no Hawaiian diacritics in the source catalogue, a blanket statement that every Hoku literally means 'star' would conceal a real distinction in the evidence.
