Meaning and background
The story behind Hopscotch
Hopscotch is a children's game in which a player hops through numbered or outlined spaces, often after throwing a marker. The word combines hop with an older sense of scotch meaning a mark or line, a derivation supported by the dictionary. It gives a dog's name an identifiable playground reference without claiming any inherited personal-name meaning. Two strongly stressed parts make it recognisable even when spoken quickly.
