Meaning and background
The story behind Horace
Horace is the familiar English and French form of the ancient Roman family name Horatius. The Roman poet commonly called Horace helped transmit that form into later naming. Horatius is sometimes related to Latin hora, meaning 'hour' or 'time', but scholars also consider an Etruscan origin, so the literal etymology remains uncertain. Horace is a two-syllable given name, not the English word for an hour.
