Meaning and background
The story behind Horatio
Horatio is an English form of the Roman family name Horatius, notable from Shakespeare's Hamlet and Admiral Horatio Nelson. Behind the Name gives both three- and four-syllable English pronunciations, so a universal rigid syllable count would be unwise. The suggested connection between Horatius and Latin hora is disputed by the possibility of an Etruscan origin. The literary and naval associations are well documented, but neither resolves that linguistic uncertainty.
