Meaning and background
The story behind Horton
Horton is an English habitational surname associated with many villages of that name. The Oxford University Press surname dictionary explains most examples through Old English elements for dirt or mud and an estate or farmstead, although one Gloucestershire place may instead include the word for a stag. That variation matters: 'stag town' is not the guaranteed meaning of Horton. The two-syllable surname can be used as a dog name without selecting an arbitrary ancestral village.
