Meaning and background
The story behind Houston
Houston is both a city name and a much older surname. The Scottish surname comes from a settlement in Renfrewshire, named using Hugh and a word for a town or settlement. Another documented route is an Irish surname variant. The Texas city was later named for Sam Houston in 1836, so it should not be presented as the source of the surname itself. The familiar English pronunciation has two syllables.
