Meaning and background
The story behind Ikea
Ikea recalls the Swedish home-furnishings brand IKEA. The company’s own history explains the acronym through founder Ingvar Kamprad’s initials, Elmtaryd, the farm where he grew up, and Agunnaryd, the nearby village. It records the business’s registration in 1943 and the later addition of furniture. This supplies an unusually specific brand-name formation, while using the spelling for a pet remains a modern nickname choice rather than an inherited personal-name tradition.
