Meaning and background
The story behind Jem
Jem is a familiar form of Jeremy and was formerly also used for James. Its English pronunciation sounds like gem, but the name reference explains it through those personal names rather than through a precious stone. That distinction lets an owner enjoy the jewel-like sound without mislabelling the derivation. For a dog, Jem gives a particularly compact call and a different final consonant from Jed or Jeb. A longer registered name is optional; choose it only if that connection is actually part of the story.
