Meaning and background
The story behind Julien
Julien is the French form of Iulianus, corresponding to Julian. Its reference pronunciation includes a French nasal final vowel, which an English-style spelling guide can easily misrepresent. The final en is therefore more than a decorative alternative when the French reading is intended. For a dog, an owner may choose Julien to preserve a family or cultural connection. Say the desired form clearly when introducing it, and keep the exact spelling rather than automatically replacing it with the more familiar Julian.
