Juneau has a French surname history with alternatives. The Dictionary of American Family Names identifies an altered form of Jouineau, from a familiar form of Jouin, and separately records a nickname derived from jeune, young. The spelling’s geographical fame does not eliminate those family-name routes. A dog named for a place and a dog carrying an inherited family surname may therefore have different stories, even though the name looks identical.
