Meaning and background
The story behind Kapo
Kapo has a documented historical word association with Nazi concentration camps. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum explains that kapos were prisoners assigned to supervise forced-labor details within the camp system, under SS authority. The term therefore carries a specific and grave historical context. This evidence concerns the institutional role, and it does not establish the origin of a separate surname, personal name or pet name that happens to share the spelling.
