Meaning and background
The story behind Kinga
Kinga has a history quite separate from the English word king, despite the first four letters. It is a Polish and Hungarian familiar form of Kunigunde, a Germanic name whose older elements are associated with kinship or royalty and warfare. The Polish and Hungarian pronunciations have different final vowels. The historical Saint Kinga gives it a further cultural connection, but it does not simply translate as ‘queen’.
