Meaning and background
The story behind Kohl
Kohl has more than one German surname route. The Dictionary of American Family Names records cabbage-growing or selling through older German vocabulary for cabbage, and separately identifies the old personal name Kolo. The occupational explanation is therefore not the only possibility. A family tribute can retain the inherited spelling without assuming one branch, while a modern cosmetic or colour association would be a different inspiration needing its own evidence.
