Meaning and background
The story behind Koume
Koume has a precise Japanese food association. Japan’s agriculture ministry explains koume as a small Japanese plum, or ume, in its account of Koshu Ko-Umezuke pickles from Yamanashi. These small fruits are used in crunchy green pickles as well as preserves, wine and jam. The ministry’s wording supports this culinary sense of the romanized word. It does not establish how a particular personal name Koume would be written in Japanese characters.
