Meaning and background
The story behind Kyrie
Kyrie has two documented, quite different uses. In a Christian liturgical context it recalls the Greek Kyrie eleison, “Lord, have mercy”; a modern American given-name tradition treats Kyrie as an invented sound-based form, as in basketball player Kyrie Irving. These histories also lead to different pronunciations, so a dog’s spelling alone does not settle its meaning.

- Used both as a modern sound-based American given name and as a form taken from the Greek Christian prayer Kyrie eleison. Source
