Meaning and background
The story behind Lancelot
Lancelot is famous as a Knight of the Round Table in Arthurian literature and appears in the writings of twelfth-century poet Chrétien de Troyes. Its derivation is less certain than the story: the name may be an Old French diminutive of Lanzo, related to Lance. That “possibly” matters. Its three syllables give a formal, literary feel without implying that a dog possesses any knightly virtues.
