Meaning and background
The story behind Lawrence
Lawrence is an English spelling of Laurence, historically derived from Roman Laurentius, meaning someone “from Laurentum”. The ancient settlement’s name may itself come from Latin laurus, the laurel tree, but that is an additional and partly tentative link. The spelling Lawrence has also been common as a surname. The normal British pronunciation begins with a short “lo” sound rather than automatically matching the French Laurent.
