Meaning and background
The story behind Legolas
Legolas is the woodland elf who joins the Fellowship in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien built the name from his invented Elvish language Sindarin, combining elements for green and foliage; his own correspondence gives the translation “Greenleaf” or “green leaves”. This is a fictional-language derivation, not a historical human personal name. The character is famous for his archery and his friendship with Gimli.
