Lehua is a Hawaiian nature name referring chiefly to the blossom of the ʻōhiʻa tree. Pukui and Elbert’s Hawaiian dictionary also records the tree itself, poetic uses for a beloved person and additional specialised senses. The name’s floral association is therefore firmly grounded, while its use need not imply one particular legend or personality type. Hawaiian pronunciation gives it three clear vowel-led syllables rather than the English word “leaf”.
