Meaning and background
The story behind Lenore
Lenore is an English shortened form of Eleanor, with a literary life of its own. Edgar Allan Poe used Lenore for the lost beloved of the narrator in The Raven, published in 1845. That association is authentic, but the ultimate historical derivation of Eleanor should not be simplified into a certain modern English word. In Britain Lenore is usually pronounced luh-NAW, with the stress on the second syllable.
