Leslie started as a Scottish surname referring to a place in Aberdeenshire, and later became a given name used for women and men. A proposed Gaelic explanation of the place name is “garden of holly”, but scholarly name sources present it as probable rather than definitive. The name has travelled widely since its adoption as a forename. Its two English pronunciations differ in whether the s is voiced, both normal possibilities.
