Meaning and background

The story behind Lich

Lich is a specialist English word with a much older history than modern fantasy. It survives from Old English līc, meaning a body or corpse, and is related to words such as German Leiche. Role-playing games and fantasy fiction often use lich for an undead sorcerer, but that later association should not be mistaken for the ancient literal meaning. It is pronounced to rhyme with “witch”.

Origin
English dialectal survival of Old English līc, “body, corpse”. Source
Meaning
Historically “body” or “corpse”; later a fantasy term in other contexts. Source
