Meaning and background

The story behind Lido

Lido is a particularly British summer word for an open-air public swimming pool. Oxford traces it back to Italian lido, “shore”, via the name of the Lido island reef near Venice. Some speakers say LEE-doh and others LYE-doh. The pool and seaside association makes its modern usage easy to explain, but does not mean every dog bearing it was named for swimming.
