Meaning and background

The story behind Lundy

Lundy is the name of an island in the Bristol Channel. The Landmark Trust gives its Old Norse island-name explanation as Lund-ey, “Puffin Island”; the local field society independently confirms that link. Lundy is also a surname with several unrelated histories, including Scottish place names, an Irish glade reference and Norwegian Lunde. The island explanation should never be claimed as the origin of every Lundy family.

Origin
As a British island name, from Old Norse Lund-ey, “Puffin Island”; an independently attested surname has other possible derivations. Source
