Meaning and background
The story behind Lydia
Lydia originally described a woman from Lydia, an ancient region in western Asia Minor, in what is now Turkey. The name also appears in the New Testament, where a woman called Lydia is associated with the early Christian community at Philippi. In English its three syllables are pronounced roughly “LID-ee-uh”. The geographical origin is much more secure than invented abstract meanings sometimes attached to it.
