Meaning and background
The story behind Macgyver
Macgyver is best known through Angus MacGyver, the resourceful lead character of the television series that began in 1985. His improvised fixes became so memorable that MacGyver entered English as a verb for making or repairing something with whatever is available. The dog-name association is therefore a modern television reference, not an ancient Scottish translation of ingenuity. The familiar short form is simply Mac.
