Meaning and background
The story behind Machito
Machito has a concrete music-history association: it was the professional name of Cuban-born bandleader Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo. Working with Mario Bauzá, he helped build the distinctive combination of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz performed by the Afro-Cubans. The Library of Congress documents that history. Although the ending resembles a Spanish diminutive, these sources do not establish one universally intended dictionary meaning for the nickname.
