Meaning and background
The story behind Macken
Macken appears as a family name in at least two traditions. The surname dictionary identifies an Irish variant of Mackin and a separate Flemish or Dutch variant of Mack. Its Irish relative Mackin is traced to Gaelic Maicín, a familiar form of mac referring to a son or young person. Because these are separate routes, it would be inaccurate to claim that every Macken surname means precisely “little son”.
