Meaning and background

The story behind Madame

Madame is the French equivalent of a respectful title for a woman, originally formed from *ma* and *dame*, “my lady”. The Académie française records its evolution from a title reserved for high-status women to a much wider form of address. Unlike the English spelling Madam, Madame visibly retains its French styling. As a dog name it has a playful air of ceremony, especially when used with a short everyday nickname.
