Meaning and background
The story behind Madeline
Madeline is an English form of Madeleine and therefore part of the wider Magdalene family. It is also familiar from Ludwig Bemelmans’s *Madeline* children’s books, whose first volume appeared in 1939. English pronunciation is not completely fixed: “MAD-ə-lin”, “MAD-lin” and “MAD-ə-line” are all recorded. The name offers both a full, literary-sounding form and short options such as Maddie, without requiring a single invented translation.
