Meaning and background
The story behind Madonna
Madonna was originally an Italian term of respect, formed from a reduced form of *mia* (“my”) and *donna* (“lady”). In Christian artistic and devotional language it especially denotes the Virgin Mary. The name also brings to mind the American pop musician, but the historical word precedes that modern association by centuries. Those are distinct contexts: Madonna is not simply a modern coinage taken from the singer’s stage name.
